Using Recycled Sewage Water to Cool Data Centres in India
Data centres need cooling, and many cooling systems use water. The Worksthal AI Research Lab is studying whether treated sewage water, rather than fresh water, can supply that cooling in India, so that growing AI capacity does not compete with homes and farms for drinking water.

Why is data-centre water use a problem in India?
Servers turn electricity into heat, and that heat has to be removed. Many data centres use evaporative or water-based cooling, which consumes water continuously. As India adds data-centre capacity for AI, that demand grows in cities where fresh water is already under pressure.
What is the idea?
Treated wastewater is sewage that has been cleaned at a treatment plant. Instead of drawing fresh water for cooling, a data centre could use treated wastewater from a nearby plant, after any extra treatment the cooling system needs, and leave fresh water for drinking and farming.
How could it work?
Treated water from a sewage treatment plant is piped to the data centre, polished to the quality the cooling equipment needs, and used in the cooling loop. Water quality is monitored continuously, and used water is returned for treatment again.
What are the challenges?
Water quality
Treated wastewater must be clean enough not to scale, corrode or foul cooling equipment.
Treatment cost
Extra treatment adds cost that has to be weighed against the price and scarcity of fresh water.
Scaling
Supply has to be reliable year-round and close enough to data-centre sites.
Regulation
Reuse standards and permissions for treated wastewater vary by state and use.
Which partners are we looking for?
- Data-centre operators willing to share cooling requirements or pilot sites
- Water utilities and sewage treatment plant operators
- Research institutions working on water treatment or cooling
- Investors interested in sustainable digital infrastructure
Recycled water cooling: FAQs
What is treated wastewater?
Treated wastewater is sewage that has been cleaned at a treatment plant to remove solids, organic matter and pathogens, so it can be safely discharged or reused for purposes such as industrial cooling.
Is treated sewage water safe for cooling systems?
It can be, once it is treated to the quality the cooling system needs. The main risks are scaling, corrosion and biological growth, which treatment and monitoring are designed to control.
